Abstract
This column is a sequel to the last issue's that dealt with SGML. XML is a newly released subset of SGML that is intended to extend the benefits of that standard to the environment commonly known as the Web. There are many benefits that will arise from XML in the Web environment if it fulfills its promise and these are well described in Michael Sperberg-McQueen's column. There are also many misconceptions arising about XML's capabilities, what it will do to the largely HTML based Web and to SGML itself. Assuming that XML delivers on all its promise, it will be interesting to watch the phenomenon of adoption, particulary how soon, how fast, and how pervasive—CBL, University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland.
